The Union Customs Code (UCC) was implemented on 1st of May 2016. A cornerstone of the legislation is the Authorised Economic Operator (AEO) standard. Unless this status has been achieved, your current HMRC-authorised operations may be significantly impacted. In particular; financial requirements in the form of guarantees, additional constraints and administrative burdens will be imposed. These will affect bottom line and current operational procedures. There is a possibility that HMRC could withdraw certain authorisations.
You may have been using your current operating procedures for a number of years, so any changes to these procedures may face some opposition. However, in order to ensure and retain your current benefits, action must be taken now. All authorisations will be compromised in some way. The need for businesses to achieve AEO status will become even more necessary post-Brexit with the numbers of customs declarations set to increase five-fold.
The AEO initiative isnât about ticking boxes or having a badge of honour. Itâs about proving your worth and integrating customs and security (where appropriate) protocols within business processes and providing evidence to back it up.

"The course enabled us to put a proper plan of action into place for AEO and focus on the things that HMRC is looking for in our application. We received guidance on how to address the issues we faced and it helped to talk to others on the course who had, or were experiencing, similar problems to ours." Steve Maher Turner Bianca
"Langdonâs AEO training programme has been invaluable to Kingsland Wines. We only had limited knowledge of the Authorised Economic Operator scheme but weâre now fully aware of the importance of it and feel far more confident that we have the right mechanism in place." David Quilliam Kingsland Wines
"As a company Raleigh was aware of the importance of the AEO scheme but we didnât know exactly what we needed to do. Langdonâs training programme has been hugely beneficial both from a company point of view and personally. Itâs certainly given me more confidence to identify the areas of the business we need to focus on to achieve AEO status." Sarah Wild Raleigh
"The AEO training has been great for AMG, especially in respect of giving us time away from the office to focus on it. Our work load pressures mean that we donât get much chance at all to sit and focus in the office. Also speaking to other companies about AEO & general business matters has been very helpful & interesting." Christine Ellin AMG Superalloys
